What shippers mean by “NMFC codes” NMFC codes (National Motor Freight Classification codes) are standardized identifiers that classify commodities in LTL networks. Each code ties a commodity description to a freight class (e.g., Class 70, 85, 125), which in turn drives rate tariffs, minimum charges, packaging requirements, and claims rules. Without the correct NMFC code, all downstream math—rates, discounts, accessorials—becomes unstable.
